We are very committed to updating the blog often with exclusive free music, videos, news and a variety of fun posts from our artists and staff. I will be reviving my Musical Notes column which has been dormant for the last few years.

We will also regularly be featuring free downloads of non- Six Degrees releases that we think deserve exposure- the first of which is a track from the excellent UK based Afro-fusion group Blissful Virtuous.

If you or anyone you know would like to submit music for the blog that you think might be appropriate, just leave me a comment and I will get back to you when I can.

On September 27, Six Degrees Records celebrates the release of Gaudi + Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s ‘Dub Qawwali’ record at Nickies in San Francisco, CA. The DJs performing for the night are Six Degrees president and co-founder Bob Duskis, The Worker (Stateless), and DJ Cyan (Grime City). Songs off the critically acclaimed Dub Qawwali album will be showcased alongside exclusive unreleased remixes. Prepare for a special night of International music across the board from reggae to qawwali to world beat, and global groove.

Dub Qawwali blends the incomparable vocals of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan with traditional instrumentation and a full spectrum of Reggae and Dub elements, Gaudi has sensitively created a set of completely new tracks from a collection of recently discovered and rare studio sessions, recorded in Pakistan in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Dub Qawwali once again brings to life one of the most powerful and moving voices of our time in an exciting new context.

August 16, 2007 marked the 10 Year anniversary of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s passing. Hailed as one of TIME magazine’s “60 Years of Asian Heroes” and dubbed by many as the ‘Elvis of the East’ and the ‘Bob Marley of Pakistan’ these titles are not without foundation; some have claimed he has sold more albums than Elvis, and he has reached as many hearts and souls and crossed as many cultural and spiritual boarders as Bob Marley with his unique mix of poetic eastern spiritual and western musical themes.

Although there have been plentiful remixes and re-workings of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, none have compared to Gaudi’s original work on Dub Qawwali. National Public Radio (NPR) has featured two stories on Gaudi’s process and reverence in creating Dub Qawwali and highlights the life of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

On April 13, CéU, the talented young Brazilian singer/songwriter, debuts in San Francisco at The Independent to celebrate the release of her self-titled debut album, co-released by Six Degrees Records and Starbucks Entertainment. CéU is the first international artist featured in the Starbucks Hear Music™ Debut series and was recently nominated for a Latin GRAMMY® in 2006 for “Best New Artist.”

Well rooted in Brazilian musical history, CéU and her five-piece band will be performing a mix of samba, electronica, reggae and jazz. Billboard magazine says, “CéU traverses the rich musical terrain of her country while updating it with hip-hop and electronic touches,” and Newsweek International boasts how, “CéU segues easily from pop to reggae to dub in velvet, jazz-accented vocals.”

CéU, whose full name is Maria do Céu Whitaker Poças was born into a musical family in the artistically diverse city of São Paulo; her father, a locally renowned composer, arranger and musicologist, taught her at a young age to appreciate the music of Brazil's great classical composers. Wow, that was a fun night.
Just got home from the 7 Year Anniversary, Full Moon "Belly Hips & Bass" edition of GROOVE GARDEN.

I had so much fun, dancin and spinnin and watchin the dance performances.

I had a great set in the chill space and a really fun set mixing the music for Freyja's midnight performance, dancin to DJ Dragonfly's ever-so-Rockin sets, Rara & Jef in the chill space (I missed Outersect & Duskis' sets & Medina's performance because I was spinning in the chill space) - and had a most amazing 1/2 hour plus mix with Miss Kelly dancing with me. Yeay! that was so awesome.

Oh and the food - divine - yummy - Thanks Lydia.

I always love the Groove Garden. It is one of my favorite events ever, and especially close because it Was the place I came to and sparked the inspiration to start spinning music myself - and WOW - now i'm spinnig at the groove garden. What a dream.

Big shout out to DJ Dragonfly for all of his support and inspiration.
He has helped many artist in a major way to take their art out and share it with more people than most of us could imagine.

Location: San Lorenzo Park in Santa Cruz

To date, this family has organized and hosted 74 of these "One Love Events" in Jamaica and on Native American reservations, colleges and at public venues in the U.S. All these events encourage the audience to claim themselves as teachers of love - as peacemakers - by exercising love and forgiveness in their lives. All are non-commercial, involve no outside funding and are free to the public. They are non-denominational, apolitical and bring forward a message of universal love for all. These events have often led to a community-wide healing. Five events on the Hopi reservation led to their defeating reservation gambling and preserving their ancient ways. Events on the Havasupai reservation on the floor of the Grand Canyon led to their electing a pro-environmental tribal council committed to protecting the Canyon. In Jamaica, 54 concerts brought a much-needed message of love to a country in turmoil.

the originals who made hip hop possible. Before Africa
Bambaata was throwing parties in the Bronx, before
Prince Whipper Whip was rocking with the Fantastic 5
and before the Rock Steady Crew ever attempted their
first windmills, Umar Bin Hassan and the Last Poets
were making rhythm and poetry live on the streets of
Harlem.
Thirty years later a number of the more socially and
politically conscious emcees are planning a tribute
album to the Last Poets featuring Common, Dead
Prez, Chuck D, Keith Murray, Buckshot, Kanye West,
Erykah Badu and others.
Since 1999, Brooklyn Producer/DJ Dub Gabriel and Last
Poets’s founder Umar Bin Hassan have collaborated in
many ways.
First with Umar’s now legendary appearance on Dub
Gabriel’s Baraka Orchestra album, Then with Dub
Gabriel and Prof. Shehab releasing Umar’s album
produced by Bill Laswell. Gabriel’s Current album
“Bass Jihad” is a modern Middle Eastern Dub
masterpiece being compared by Billboard magazine to
Brian Eno as well as on the best of 2005 list from
many magazines and radio stations from around the
world.
The night will be a celebration of not only the return
meeting of these two artist, but also it will be the
first time Dub Gabriel is in New York since moving to
Berlin Germany 8 months ago.
This legendary night will feature Dub Gabriel\s
Brooklyn Massive soundsystem doing all live dubbing
and music creating. as well as Trumpet maestro Satish
on the dub trumpet and surprise guest!!
